Proposed Olympia Building redesign could pay tribute to its past

The new owners of Downtown's landmark Olympia Building are in the process of finalizing redevelopment plans for the two-story structure. Based on new renderings, it appears that, believe it or not, the building's rich history could guide the project moving forward.

Last fall, state officials sold the historic building at the intersection of Decatur Street, Edgewood Avenue, and Peachtree Street to CSH-23 Peachtree LLC, a company with ties to the Atlanta- and Tampa-based firm Encore Real Estate, for $2.2 million. The property, which had remained on the market since 2012, has had a number of different rumored uses - including being converted into a pharmacy that may or may not be a Walgreen's.

The new renderings further suggest that the chain pharmacy store could occupy the wedge-shaped structure. The plans remain faithful to the building's past by leaving much of the facade originally designed Atlanta architecture firm Ivey and Crook untouched. Existing stone cladding and the signage would "match historical precedent" dating that to the days when Wormer Hats occupied the space. The iconic Coca-Cola sign overlooking Peachtree Street would stay in its place and the first-floor arcade would be enclosed.

We've reached to Encore Real Estate for further comment about the tenant. If we hear back, we'll post an update. For now, check out a couple more renderings of the Downtown building after the jump:
