First Slice 4/18/14: Construction on new Braves stadium begins in July

Construction on the new Braves stadium in Cobb County is slated to begin in July. If everything stays on schedule, the soft opening will be Feb. 21, 2017.

Mayor Kasim Reed said that the city has received a variety of offers on Turner Field and the surrounding 77-acre property. Georgia State is one of the parties involved in the talks.

Until new superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen takes over, there is a hiring freeze for Atlanta Public Schools unless the position that needs filling directly involves students. That means APS is still able to hire teachers, principals, bus drivers, and food workers.

The unemployment rate has declined to 7.0%, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. That is the lowest unemployment rate in the state since Sept. 2008.

Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez died yesterday. The Nobel laureate was 87.
