First Slice 4/23/14: Deal expected to sign controversial 'guns everywhere' bill today

Gov. Nathan Deal is planning to sign H.B. 60 - legislation that expands gun rights in airports, bars, and churches, among other places - sometime today in Ellijay. "There are always opportunities for people to use any piece of legislation as a political tool if they don't like it," he told the AJC about what critics have referred to as the "guns everywhere" measure. "But there was bipartisan support for the bill."

Mayor Kasim Reed says that Fort McPherson will likely be sold "by the end of July at the latest."

The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation is now accepting requests for grants as part of the $15 million set aside to help transform the neighborhoods surrounding the new Falcons stadium. "Because this is a place-based initiative, it is about finding community partners to help transform the area into what we all want it to be," Frank Fernandez, the foundation's vice president of community development, told the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Atlanta Public Schools' new $658 million budget includes cash for pay hikes, furlough day reductions, and more charter schools.
