First Slice 4/29/14: Atlanta Streetcar testing to begin next month

Starting next month, you can expect to see the Atlanta Streetcar cruising around parts of Downtown and Old Fourth Ward. There's no riding the trams just yet as operators will only be testing them to make sure they work properly.

Ponce City Market's developer has nabbed $180 million in financing for the continued construction of the 1.1 million square-foot mixed-use project. The Atlanta Business Chronicle says it's the largest loan of its kind in Atlanta in nearly five years.

For quite some time, Fulton County commissioners have reportedly been chauffeured around by on-duty police officers to the airport, concerts, and other public events. The county's policy says that elected officials are only supposed to ask for rides when there are documented threats. "Unfortunately, we live in a dangerous world," Commissioner Emma Darnell told the AJC. "I wish it wasn't necessary, but it is."

Clark Atlanta University has received a $7.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to help its Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development study prostate cancer and associated health discrepancies.

ICYMI: Gov. Nathan Deal's $20.8 billion budget includes funding for public education, the Savannah Port, and a Falcons parking deck.
