Kenny Leon earns Tony nom for 'Raisin in the Sun' redux

Atlanta director Kenny Leon has earned his second Tony Award nomination in the best director category for his star-studded redux of A Raisin in the Sun. This is Leon's second Broadway revival of the play. The first, in 2004, starred Sean "Diddy" Combs" in the lead role of Walter Lee, which Denzel Washington fills this go-round.

The play received a total a five nominations, including best revival, best performance by an actress in a leading role for LaTanya Richardson Jackson (wife of Samuel Jackson), and two best performance by an actress in a featured role nods for Anika Noni Rose and Sophie Okonedo.

It continues through June 15 at New York's Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Holler If Ya Hear Me, Leon's Broadway musical inspired by the music of Tupac Shakur, officially opens four days later on July 19 at the Plaza Theater with poet/musician/actor Saul Williams starring in the lead role.
