First Slice 5/4/14: All hail California Chrome

Everyone put your hands together for Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome. And the horse's owners, who today are some of the luckiest people in the country.

Atlanta City Councilmembers who are looking to trim the budget and free up cash are taking a close look at shutting down some of the city's tax allocation districts, or TADs. Considering the funding mechanisms can sometimes be used to pay for special-interest projects, expect fireworks if the talks continue.

If you're near Lenox Square Mall tonight, don't freak out if you see police outfitted in commando gear. Law enforcement officials are conducting a drill simulating a terrorist attack at the shopping center.

Who reads the thousands of annual federal reports that gobble up worker hours, paper, and time? Probably not the U.S. Congress.

ICYMI: Central Presbyterian Church, a progressive Downtown house of worship that for years has operated homeless services, is installing a fence to block off an alleyway where men and women sleep at night because of safety and sanitation concerns.
