First Slice 7/11/14: Dr. Beverly Hall unable to attend APS trial due to health problems

According to a doctor's report filed yesterday, former Atlanta Public Schools superintendent Dr. Beverly Hall's health has deteriorated to a point that won't allow her to attend the trial in August for the APS cheating scandal. Hall has been diagnosed with terminal Stage 4 breast cancer. Dr. Laura Weakland, Hall's physician, said, "It would be difficult for her [Hall] to leave her home each day to endure a 6-8 hour trial day. Moreover, as set forth above, she is chronically fatigued and often resting or sleeping as a result of the chemotherapy. She would be physically unable to remain alert for a typical trial day much less assist her lawyers in hours when the trial was not underway."

Upon being informed via email of Hall's inability to attend the trial, Fulton County Assistant District Attorney Lori Canfield accidentally responded with a reply-all message to dozens of lawyers connected to the case. Canfield wrote, "Surprise, surprise." She has been suspended for three days without pay as a result.

The National Gay Blood Drive is happening today in more than 60 cities. Pairs of people, one gay or bisexual man and a straight "ally," will turn up to donate blood. Only the straight ally is allowed to donate based on a 1983 FDA ruling that banned gay and bisexual men from donating blood. The goal is to raise awareness of the ban and to illustrate how much more blood could be collected if the ban on donations from gay and bisexual men was lifted.

The College Football Hall of Fame now has an official name and will open ahead of schedule. The College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience opens Aug. 23. Seems like the last time we caught a glimpse of the "Chick-fil-A Fan Experience" it involved lining up for hours outside their restaurants to demonstrate how much one loves deep-fried bird and hates equality. But hey, at least you'll probably be able to enjoy some waffle fries while exploring the glories of the gridiron.
