Y'all ain't ready for 'Black Jesus'

Remember a few months ago when "Boondocks" creator Aaron McGruder left that cryptic yet conciliatory update on his Facebook page, explaining that he wouldn't be involved in season four of his acclaimed animated series? Though the note provoked as many questions as it answered, he made one thing clear: There would be a second coming.

"Black Jesus," the live-action show he's been working on in the meantime, is set to premiere on Adult Swim Aug. 7 at 11 p.m.

The series stars newcomer Gerald “Slink” Johnson as the robe-and-sandals wearing "Black Jesus" who has come to Compton, Calif., with good hair, a foul mouth, and the power to save lost souls. Show co-stars include Charlie Murphy ("The Chapelle Show"), Corey Holcomb ("The Cleveland Show"), John Witherspoon (Granddad from "The Boondocks"), and more. From the trailer above it looks like a lost sequel to the "Friday" franchise. (Good Friday, perhaps?)

This isn't the first look at McGruder's "Black Jesus." He spawned the series from a string of original YouTube sketches produced by his Partner Rumble Studios company five years ago. The sketches are no longer available online, but it looks like a lot of the same material has been revived in the re-up. As the clip and the 11 p.m. air time suggests, this one should be as crude and subversive as "The Boondocks." It's Aaron McGruder; we'd expect nothing less.
