First Slice 6-19-14: MARTA eyes rail expansion in north Fulton

“Connect 400” might mean more rail service for north Fulton.

With debate about expansion into Clayton Count continuing, MARTA is also considering expanding its rail service farther north in Fulton County.

The sale of Morris Brown College’s campus to Invest Atlanta and Friendship Baptist Church was approved by a federal judge yesterday. Clark Atlanta University objects to the sale and may pursue further litigation at the state level. CAU maintains that the schools have a decades-old agreement to use the land for educational purposes.

Early this morning in Sandy Springs, a standoff between SWAT officers and a man who had “threatened his mother with a Taser-type stun gun after she contacted police regarding his irrational behavior,” ended peacefully with the man being taken into custody and sent to Grady for a mental evaluation.

House Republicans will vote on their leadership today after the surprising primary upset of Eric Cantor. Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, currently the majority whip, is expected to take Cantor’s place. Several candidates are vying for the third leadership position that McCarthy’s expected victory will open up.
