Atlanta Streets Alive - a bike ride meets block party - kicks off Sunday

Edgewood and Auburn avenues will be closed to automobile traffic and turned over to the people

Don’t plan to drive on Edgewood or Auburn avenues this Sunday. Between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., it’s for the peeps and peeps alone.

Thanks to the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, Councilman Kwanza Hall and some die-hard volunteers, the downtown streets will play host to the inaugural Atlanta Streets Alive, a free, daylong event aimed at encouraging the public to enjoy and get active in the city’s urban core.

Approximately two miles along the historic streets between downtown and Boulevard will be closed to automobile traffic.

Musicians including roaming band Vegan Coke will perform throughout the day. A variety of activities, including yoga, capoiera, and bellydancing will be available along the route. Children (or adults) can hopscotch, double Dutch and hula hoop. The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition will lead cyclists on a 4.4-mile ride every hour beginning at 2 p.m. Pedicabs will also roam the area.

If you’ve ever wanted to skateboard down the middle of Edgewood and not worry about getting hit by a bus, this could be your chance. And if you want to toss down a blanket and people-watch from the sidewalk, you’re more than welcome.

Basically, it’s your day to enjoy the streets your tax dollars pay for, says ABC Executive Director Rebecca Serna.
