Andre 3000’s ‘i feel ya’ jumpsuit collection gets summer exhibit

SCAD’s Museum of Art in Savannah features an exhibition that explores rhetorical expression, July 17-Sept. 13.

?Still looking for that new rap album from Andre 3000? Look no further. Seriously, stop it already. And prepare yourself, instead, for a worthwhile day trip. Because i feel ya is the next best thing, and it’s coming to a museum near Atlanta.
?
?The jumpsuit exhibit that debuted at Art Basel last December is coming to Savannah for an extended summer exhibit at SCAD. i feel ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin opens this Friday, July 17 and remains on view through Sept. 13.
?
?Never one to limit his creative expression to one form, Dre turned last year’s OutKast reunion tour into a virtual canvas of thought with his custom-designed black jumpsuits featuring original Twitter-length sayings.
?
?The notoriously reluctant live performer agreed to do the show despite admitted feelings of boredom with the classic discography. Though stuck performing legendary hits for the masses, he found a way to sneak in some new musings. The resulting 47 jumpsuits each sported a quirky phrase, thought-provoking inquiry, or left-brain declaration. From mere mind farts (like one that literally read: “Art or Fart?”) to profound observations on the ills of the world (“Across cultures, darker people suffer most. Why?”), Dre proved he still has something to say.
?
?The jumpsuits serve as the basis for an exhibition that explores rhetorical expression and invites viewers to engage critically. A mashup of fashion, film, and painting, the show is rounded out by experimental filmmaker Greg Brunkalla and large-scale abstract painter Jimmy O’Neal.
?
?“As I initially thought about displaying this collection, I immediately knew I that wanted to work with my longtime collaborative partners at SCAD,” Benjamin said via press release at the time of the exhibition’s original showing at Mana in Miami last December.
?
?Jimmy O’Neal’s past work includes a “brain machine” that paints from EEG connections to the artist. SCAD graduate Brunkalla’s commissioned work Trumpets is described as a film that “uses the thoughts and expressions on the jumpsuits as a creative point of departure to build a broader conversation about language and context. Two projectors cast words and phrases onto a single surface without syncing to the film itself—a spontaneous effect that creates a wholly unique experience for each audience and screening.”
