First Slice 7/31/15: Undercover cops cracking down on texting while driving

Distracted driving is “the DUI of the future,” say officers. Plus, new study shows how much MARTA riders save and more local news.

Some Georgia law enforcement officials are going undercover dressed as construction workers to bust motorists guilty of texting while driving. They’re looking for anyone who is using a cell phone behind the wheel, even those reading a message while stopped at a light. “I really think this is the DUI of the future. Impairment is still a problem, but this distracted driving is killing as many people as drunk drivers,” says Marietta police officer Nick Serkedakis.

?Speaking of commuting, a new study calculates how much you could save by taking public transit. According to the American Public Transportation Association, the average Atlantan could save $10,753 a year (not to mention that $150 ticket you could face if you get caught on your phone).

?Monday has been canceled for students in Chattooga County, where the school week is now just four days long. Students, parents, and school officials seem pleased with the new schedule. They claim it has resulted in fewer absences, lower costs, and higher test scores.
