First Slice 1-14-16: A new bill could allow LBGT discrimination

A new bill would legally allow businesses to refuse serving gay couples. House bill 756 would excuse such behavior — denying goods or services for a “matrimonial ceremony” for queer people — under the guise of religious beliefs. State Rep. Kevin Tanner, R-Dawsonville is the lead sponsor of 756.

Next month Georgia will move forward in executing its oldest Death Row inmate. Brandon Astor Jones, 72, is slated to die February 2. He was convicted in 1979 for killing a Cobb Country convenience store manager.

Gov. Nathan Deal holds off pulling the trigger on a teacher merit pay proposal. He announced the surprising shift in priorities in Wednesday’s State of the State address, saying he plans to review education review ideas over the next year.

A drive-by shooting left a 7-year-old girl with gun wounds in her leg. The girl was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston but at last check, was listed in stable condition and is expected to survive. The incident happened overnight at the Paradise East complex on Bouldercrest Road.

British actor Alan Rickman is dead at 69. He passed in London after suffering from cancer.
