Lawn care dude is a wizard on Photoshop

Grant Wallace gets creative promoting his lawn care biz.

With a business email address like theworldsbestmower@gmail.com, it can really go one of two ways. Either you’re dealing with a pretentious teen passively hustling to purchase a new iPad or sharp shooter with a solid sense of humor. Grant Wallace may be a bit of a mix. Around the time he launched Grant’s Lawn Care, he got cracking on a promo plan, namely through a series of wild flyers uh, involving swords, among other themes. It’s a refreshing way to approach something as dreary (or allergy-activating) as keeping a nice lawn. CL chatted with Wallace via email about drumming in BABY BABY, yard work as a means to stay physically fit, and how business exploded since his “GoT”-themed flyer went semi-viral on r/Atlanta.

Why “GoT”?
Love the show. Love puns. “Game of Thrones,” winter is coming. Nah. “Game of Thorns,” summer is coming.

That’s a pretty ballsy, specific email address. How long have you been in the landscaping biz? What other types of self-promotion have you used in the past?
I’ve been in the landscaping biz for about three weeks, haha. I’ve been playing in the band BABY BABY for seven years. Our singer reminded me of one time like five years ago we made a Facebook event page about our album coming out and decided to invite EVERY friend on Facebook. it wasn’t even an actual event. Luckily I don’t do that anymore. now I just invite all my friends to like some silly lawn care Facebook page.

When did you start dispersing these flyers IRL? And in what areas? What made you want to post on Reddit? Have you noticed a boom in interest because of the “GoT” design?
I posted the “Game of Thorns” flyer April 24 at 9 p.m. (timed it up perfectly with the release). By the next day I received about a dozen responses and they keep coming in. I just got a call a few minutes ago from a guy that said, “You know, I was going to go with one of the other hundred lawn care companies out there but no one has done a flyer like that before.” And you know what, he’s right. I Googled “lawn care flyer” out of curiosity and THEY ARE TERRIBLE.

I post a lot on r/atlanta. sometimes about my band, BABY BABY, or my melted Atlanta crayon artwork, Grantskis. Here is the latest comment I’ve got from my last flyer: “Great way to not get business.” Yeah. fun fact. I got hit up today by a Creative Loafing freelance writer to help her with her lawn.

Tell me about your relationship with “GoT” and how that corresponds with lawn maintenance.
It’s one of my favorite series so I had to do it. Also, I had this sword sitting in my back closet that I got from a friend at a party of mine. “GoT” is just the beginning. In fact, its my fourth flyer to date. I’ve done one of me surfing a lawn mower, a “Better Call Saul” flyer, a parody of “The Creation of Adam” painting, and another one where I was hanging out with Wall-E. Right now I’m SUPER into “Scrubs.” So yeah. There’s a little sneak peak of what’s to come. I’m no Superman!

You drum in BABY BABY, too. How do you balance late nights performing with grueling days huffing lawn clippings?
This is how this whole thing started! We were playing in Charleston a few weeks ago and I was absolutely exhausted after my set. I told myself, “Grant, you need to get in better shape.” The next day I started Grant’s Lawn Care.

How do you keep cool when it gets so dang hot during Atlantan summers?
Right now I got this cool rag that stays damp all day long. I also have a hat, swimming trunks, and an endless supply of tank tops. Just add a Camelbak and some sunscreen and I’m good to go!
