Celebrating the dumb with Dave Ross

Darkness rains down on the nation as the Zodiac Killer aka Ted Cruz suspends his presidential campaign, clearing the path for Donald Trump to take the GOP. Since the beginning of this election season, no matter who you were planning on voting for, Bernie, Hillary, Harrison Ford via write-in, a lot of the country came together in agreement that anyone would be better than the Donald. Los Angeles comedian Dave Ross made his stance official when he tweeted out a photo of a campaign sign of his own design simply stating, “IDK NOT TRUMP THO 2016.”

The photo went viral, getting picked up by Buzzfeed, LAist, and more leading Ross to take his dumb joke to another dumb level and start selling signs, bumper stickers, and T-shirts bearing his new mantra. Summing up the election in a beautifully stupid nutshell, Urban Outfitters jumped on board the Trump Dump chain and now sells Ross’ shirts in their stores.

Ross slays at silly jokes like this. In addition to appearing inebriated on Comedy Central’s “Drunk History,” Ross is well known for his sketch group, Women, which has been featured by IFC and and “Tosh.0.” Women sketches celebrate the dumbest ideas, producing short, delightfully immature sketches. Their most popular video centers on a terrible sex education video Ross narrates, substituting any proper names for reproductive parts with “garbage.”

embed-1 While his online presence is even more goofy, Ross’ stand-up is more of mix between the absurd and personal. “I thought I was gay for four years,” Ross says in one bit. “I’m not gay but there’s a whole high school that disagrees with that.” Ross is also a proficient storyteller, with a Moth Grand Slam victory and appearances on the Risk podcasts under his belt, both compelling performances dripping in dark humor. Ross is no stranger to dark waters. On his popular (now retired) Nerdist podcast Terrified, Ross and his guests tackle two subjects: what they hate about themselves, and their biggest fears. The podcast often felt like listening in on someone’s therapy session. Like a lot of what Ross does, Terrified made you laugh and cry as comedians and more opened themselves up along Marc Maron’s “WTF” vein.

Ross brings his full arsenal of silly and profound jokes to WonderRoot Saturday night for a very special edition of WonderComedy, hosted by Andrew Michael with special guests Brian Emond and Paige Bowman.
