Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard on Friday charged James Burns, a former officer who shot and killed a black unarmed motorist during a traffic stop, with felony murder and other charges. According to the AJC, it is the first and only time a Georgia DA has brought charges in at least six years against an officer who fatally shot a civilian without first seeking a grand jury indictment.

“Everything in Atlanta that you could want ─ the Phillips, the Dome, the Congress Center, everything with civil rights movement, it’s literally all in this area. You can park and you can literally walk wherever you want to go.”

Dr. Jan Gorniak, Fulton’s new chief medical examiner, has already navigated a “fierce political and media battle that speaks to her ability to handle the types of high-profile cases that often are handled by” the county MEs, says Saporta Report’s David Pendered.
