Why Bother

As Adult., Detroit couple Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller have emerged at the same time as the recent electroclash explosion. But their music, a deliberate throwback to the industrial and proto-techno styles of Chris and Cosey and Cabaret Voltaire, is more rigorous and difficult, even if their astringent electro dovetailed nicely with that fad. "Good deeds, nice smiles/A pack mentality/Sweltering, smothering/So very disappointing," sings Kuperus on "Good Deeds." Her feel-bad (albeit tongue-in-cheek) perspective, however, is leavened somewhat by Miller's backing tracks. Oddly, despite its grim tone, Why Bother is one of Adult.'s most accessible albums, the result of the couple's ability to conjure intoxicatingly paranoid music. 4 stars.

Adult. performs at the Earl. 9 p.m. Thurs., April 12.
