Shannon Mulvaney wears many hats. He's an acclaimed bassist for Anna Kramer and the Sweetloves, co-owner (with Andrew Quinn) of record label International Hits and, most importantly, store clerk at Criminal Records.
Now Mulvaney hopes to add another title to his collection: cancer survivor. Two months ago, the 40-year-old learned he has colon cancer. "Right now, it sucks because I've been in a lot of pain," he says. "I'm hoping that after I go through [chemotherapy and radiation] treatment and go through surgery, I'll be up to speed again."
To help with medical costs, his co-workers at Criminal Records organized a fundraiser and celebrity roast. It takes place at the Earl on Sat., July 8, and announced performers include the Selmanaires, the Liverhearts, the Roy Owens Jr., Johnny Knox, Anna Kramer and the Sweetloves.
The headliner for the night is former Atlanta favorite Seely. After breaking up in 2000, the electronic band will reunite for one night only.
"I asked Lori [Scacco], who now lives in New York," says Steve Satterfield about the reunion. Satterfield once played in Seely with Scacco, Joy Howard and Eric Taylor. He's now a chef at Watershed restaurant in Decatur. "When she found out about Shannon's situation, she said, 'You know, if it was for any other reason, I would probably say no. But if it's something for Shannon, I would absolutely do it.' That was the general consensus for everybody."
Mulvaney will be at the benefit, so say hello. But don't buy him a beer. "I wish I could drink with everybody, but the doctor says I can't," he says, laughing.
DESTINY MONTAGUE, singer for Shock Cinema, made an unexpected announcement during her band's June 23 set at Corndogorama. "This is our last show in a really long time," she said. "You have to treat this like a going-away party."
Several days later, Jess Bowling, who crafts Shock Cinema's visuals, clarified that he's moving to Providence to attend the Rhode Island School of Design. Meanwhile the group's other members, Montague and guitarist Autry Fulbright, are headed to Brooklyn. "We're going to consider Shock Cinema as a New York band," he says, adding the band will play often around the Big Apple.
Unfortunately, local fans anxious to see Shock Cinema in action may wait indefinitely for the group's return. "We've done fairly well in Atlanta," says Bowling. He adds, "For the foreseeable future, [we're] going to be up in the Northeast for the rest of this year." Wish them luck.
