Hey, it's Fat Tuesday and Chinese New Year. Happily it's the year of the pig, so you should go eat your fill at a New Orleans-style restaurant and then head to a Chinese restaurant and eat more. My standbys of the latter are the new Frank Ma's, Canton House, Oriental Pearl and Pung Mie. Silk in Midtown and Pyng Ho in Decatur both have special menus planned for a few days.
As for Cajun or Creole cooking, there's not much to recommend. Fuzzy's has closed. You might try Depeaux in Decatur or Front Page News in Midtown and Inman Park. Pappadeaux, at various suburban locations, ain't bad. And of course, there's always the inimitable Popeye's. I'm sorry to report that the restaurant on Boulevard at Ponce, home of the world's worst service until recently, is closed due to a fire, according to the sign. Another case of arson by a pissed-off customer?

Leaving out Redfish too? In your own 'hood? You must have a story about this?
Althought the Po Boys are good at Just Loafin', they're not worth the hassle. No place to park, the drive through takes 30 min, and the employees really don't care about you. The "laid back" attitude the employees take is just laziness and rudeness. "Laid back" is something the customers is supposed to feel, not the workers.
I've had really bad service at Just Loafin' as well. I went through the drive through once and it took 45 minutes. They got the order completely wrong, and when we pointed it out they basically said "oh well, if you want to wait another 20 minutes we can fix it." I've also had undercooked catfish there. Blech.
I should have included Red Fish; it was on my list. I thought about Just Loafin' , too, but I haven't been happy with my food there the last few visits. Then again, I'd rather go there than to Emeril's, which I didn't mention, either. Maybe somebody can explain why good, independent cajun/creole restaurants are such a rarity in our city and why, when they do appear, they disappear so quickly. I still miss Gumbo a Go Go on Ponce.
I loved Gumbo a Go Go - that was a great place to get affordable, well made cajun/creole food. There was a location in Vinings too. I ate there at least once a week. I was hoping Just Loafinâ would be a decent substitute, but it looks like that isn't the case. If I have a chance to be downtown during a week day, I'd like to try Fleur De Lis' reincarnation as a creole restaurant and see if it's anything to write home about.
Aw, Gumbo-a-go-go, how I miss you. You and Tortillas. I remember going into the gumbo place that replaced gumbo-a-go-go. It took 30 minutes to get my order. It was pretty good, but I thought to myself, "This place will never last with service like this." A few months later they found three dead bodies there. Apparently the restaurant was a drug front. Ah, how I love Atlanta. (At least those drug dealers knew how to cook though.)
