Dinner and gossip

Posted by Cliff Bostock on Tue, May 6, 2008 at 3:01 PM

It's official. Tom Catherall is taking over the space vacated by Emeril's. His new Asian-style restaurant, Aja, will open October 1.

We ran into Catherall at his latest venture, Home, to which we returned for dinner last night, after an amazing lunch last Friday. Catherall said his concept is inspired by Paris' legendary Buddha Bar, known as much for its musical ambiance (and recordings) as its fusion of French and Asian cooking (think Vietnam).

Aja (pronounced "Asia") takes its name from the title track of Steely Dan's pivotal 1977 album. If you've never heard the song, check out the video below.

As it happens, Richard Blais was not in the kitchen last night. Catherall explained that the "Top Chef" contestant had to return to New York for further filming. Let's see. The season's filming is supposed to be complete. Could that mean....

Cliff, you need to put a big SPOILER alert on top of that post! ASAP! (Personally, I don't mind a potential spoiler, but lots of folks will read that and be, like, "oh shizzz! that's not cool!")

Blais is going to win Top Chef. He is the only one of those doofus' that have any integrity and does not involve himself in the sniping of the others. Plus he continues to produce the most innovative dishes of them all.

biskuit- it's not necessarily a spoiler... If you recall the previous seasons, the whole cast is there for the taping of the finale :)

just trying to protect the spoiler-phobic among us. i'll go with the it's-not-a-spoiler theory for now, but last year, i thought it was just the finalists out cooking fish by the side of a stream in aspen or wherever they were. then the whole cast came in for the LIVE final show (which won't be for another 6 weeks or so from now, right?)?

Are they even doing the final show live this season? It was a little dumb last season, and I'm not sure they're doing it that way again. I can't find an answer on the Bravo website.

According to Eater: "We have it on very good authority that the Top Chef finale will start taping this weekend. We don't know who is in the finale, and we don't know for sure where, but rumor has it Big Tom, Pads, Gail, Ted and the happy band of guest judges are heading out to the Carribbean (think: sofrito, arroz con pollo, Salsa, J-Lo). Also unconfirmed but assumed: The finale will be taped, but the winner will be revealed on live TV." [EaterWire]

Did someone say that Blais has integrity?!?!?!? He's the biggest prick in the history of the world. He rips off dishes and recipies from more accomplished chefs. He can't keep a restaurant open for more than a year. The only time his kitchen had any kind of sustained success was when Bob Amick was holding his riegns. And Blais still ended up fucking them in the end.

It's NOT a spoiler. Both Top Chef and Hell's Kitchen bring back previously eliminated contestants to help run the kitchen in the finals. You don't know if he's the finalist or a sous chef.

Pork is Love: Hey BoBo, maybe you were on the short bus when the special ed teacher explained what 'integrity' is. It is believing in your self and own dreams and sticking to them. Blais has trouble in Atlanta because the douchebag wannabes like yourself only want to hang at mediocre 'hipster' joints opened by the no talent Amick so you can delude yourself into thinking your are somehow 'cool'. Now go back to PieBar (oops, that closed too didn't it). Amick is a hack and I don't blame Richard for sticking to his guns. And if that makes him a prick, then god only knows what it makes you. Oh that's right, a LOSER!!!HAHAHAHA!
