Alibaba in Little Five Points

We stopped at Alibaba Mediterranean Restaurant (1099 Euclid Ave., 404-223- in Little Five Points recently. The cafe, located in the former space of Olive Bistro, is owned by the same folks who operate Alibaba's downtown.

We ordered their plate with a sample of various items (right), along with a falafel wrap. I liked the latter, which was made with a very spicy tahini sauce and crunchy falafel. I was less impressed with the combo plate's stuffed grape leaves and rather dry hummus.

Nonetheless, the place is very congenial, with owners who want you to taste everything they make. There's a covered patio on the side, shared with Java Lords, a cool coffee shop next door.

You can also smoke a hookah here. This craze for fruity-flavored smoking is showing up everywhere. You can associate it with Middle Eastern fairy tales and magic carpets. For me, a hookah will always be the main decorative item in my psychedelically decorated freshman dormitory room...and I wasn't smoking banana-flavored mellow yellow.
