Five Guys and a laywer

Posted by Andisheh Nouraee on Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 7:23 PM

This sign below is posted at the Five Guys burger joint in Alpharetta.

Five Guys, One Lawyer

I'm a big fan of not inadvertently killing children, but this strikes me more as lawyerly ass-covering than a sensible measure to protect children.

Do other peanut-y places do this?

As I have heard teachers remark often when I see them come in, it's not so much the kids that are the problem than the parents. Someone's precious snowflake probably picked up a peanut shell and put in their mouth and then all of a sudden it's nasty lawyerly threat time. Kids put inappropriate things in their mouths all the time. They're kids. But apparently having to post a sign about something that was entirely accidental...well, it's Nanny State we live in anymore.

No, lawyerly ass-covering would be either getting rid of the peanuts altogether, or making you sign a release to enter the place. I bet there was a complaint from a parent, and the management of that Five Guys decided to be neighborly and post the sign. Read it again, there's no threat, and no evidence of Nanny State government intervention.

There's nothing Nanny State-ish about it unless there's an Alpharetta peanut ordnance. I considered it might be Five Guys just being neighborly, but there giant peanut crates there also have a warning about removing peanuts from the store. The local store doesn't print those boxes.

It's not just the Alpharetta Five Guys, either. The store south of L5P has the same warning signs hanging in it. They're silly.

I first noticed this sign in a Five Guys in Washington, DC about six months ago. I promptly sent the picture to everyone in my phone, so they have been notified of the threat. There'll be no swelled-up kids loitering outside hamburger joints on my watch.

Hey now, no slagging on Five Guys. That burger rocks the camel's ass. They can cover their legal butt all they like as long as they bring the burger.

Hav eyou ever seen a kid have an allergic reaction to peanuts? A friend's daughter almost died right in front of me. There weren't any peanuts in the food she was eating. The pan used to prepare what she ate, had peanuts in it at one point, and teh "residue" transferred to the newly cooked food. It's one scary-ass allergy.
