The Oakhurst restaurant will apparently be closing by the end of the month if it doesn't "get help". Check out the Myspace page for details.

restaurants are tough business.. sometimes fd.critics can help the most, or ther way around.
edgewood wont be cheap for long, the direction that it is headed. so many restaurants are opening that area. serpas, miso izakaya, ria bluebird, suite lounge.
Absolutely pathetic to ask for money. If I can't pay rent, I don't ask strangers to pay for it. Obviously you have no friends or you have used them up already. Go get a real job, you obviously can't cook.
thats a harsh thing to say Sanford. Restaurant business is very risky. if you never been through it then you cant really ever know. when it doesnt work out, the owner loses more than just his or her wallet. Tough times. Never feel sorry for asking for help.
Lamont has a tendency to troll this board upon occasion unfortunately. I am sorry that Calavino's is suffering. I hope she gets the help she needs. Sadly my budget (retail, y'know) has no wiggle room to do my part.
I worked for Calavino at The Roman Lily Cafe and thought Lamont should know a little about her. When my car broke down she bought me a new one. When a co-workers mother died she bought them a plane ticket home.I remember when she was held up at gun point while feeding the homeless and the year she saw that a local family was on the news after all of their Christmas presents were stolen. She found them and took them shopping. She also threw a party every thanksgiving and Christmas for us and all of our customers providing all of the food and drinks as well as presents for everyone at no charge. And none of us will forget the night she was cooking for a full house and she threw down her spatula and ran out the door to chase a mugger she saw attacking a woman. She always took care of others before she took care of her self and although there were many times we knew she herself needed help she never asked and seldom accepted. We always said it would come back to her someday. It makes me sick that someone like you sits in judgment of her. Good luck Calavino my girlfriend and I will be in to support. E.
We are great fans of Calavino's and are VERY interested in her continuing to provide the best food in Oakhurst. I hope the savemyrestaurant campaign is a big success and that we can continue dining with Calavino for years to come.
I work for calavino and i have enjoyed working for every sunday since June a little bit. She is one the most passionate people i know , about food and people. she trusts me in her kitchen, her food creativity is inspirational. She fed me and my family for my birthday ( thank you Cal), and she is on my son's pick up list. ( How many employers do that?) Her soul food makes me dance when I eat it, when my son comes in the rest. he is treated like vip and my daughter and Cal have special relationship. She is worthy of the culinary and life sucess she has coming her way0 that being said- please support Calavino's in what ever way possible. If she stays, beautifyl food will have the please for gracing Oakhurst and 10 people with families ( Cal included) stay employed in this delcious economy and if she goes send her an abundance of energy for smooth transition. Love ya Cal and a sincere thank you for being you!!!!!!

OK, it looks like the owner is a wonderful, generous, deserving individual, but the marketplace determines who wins and who loses in the business world. Friends and I have tried Calavino's a few times and each time food was either cold, tough, bland, and, honestly, not worth our money. Sorry. We tried - really we did.
It is great that Cal is a great person. I've met her a few times and she seems truly nice. Her food looks good, though being vegan, there isn't much possibility of me eating there... But that said, starting a web campaign begging strangers for money is a bit ill-advised. If you make bad business decisions (i.e. not stocking up money from Roman Lily's raging success when you know your lease is coming due), then these things happen. Ask those you have helped to return the favor if they can. Ask your family to invest. Put the word out that you are shopping for investors to back you. Throw a Calavinos benefit. But seriously, begging publicly? In a tight economy, if people are not patronizing your business because they cannot afford to, how can they give you free money?
