If you haven't already heard, the James Beard Foundation has announced semi-finalists for its 2009 awards. There are a few surprises. Both Scott Peacock of Watershed and Anne Quatrano are in the running for outstanding chef in the nation. And Hector Santiago of Pura Vida is among semi-finalists for best chef in the Southeast.

Best chef, Southeast: Hugh Acheson, Five and Ten in Athens; Arnaud Berthelier, The Dining Froom at the Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead; Linton Hopkins, Restaurant Eugene; Hector Santiago, Pura Vida.
Outstanding chef (national): Scott Peacock and Anne Quatrano.
Outstanding restaurant: Bacchanalia
Outstanding restaurateur: Pano Karatassos of Buckhead Life Restaurant Group
Best new restaurant: Holeman and Finch Public House
Outstanding service: The Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead
Rising star chef of the year: Kevin Gillespie, Woodfire Grill
Outstanding pastry chef: Aaron Russell of The Chocolate Bar
