Johnny Cakes opens in Castleberry Hill

Posted by Besha Rodell on Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at 10:24 PM

I just got an email about a restaurant called Johnny Cakes opening at 323 Walker Street. I so hope this is a gay, mafia-themed diner.

If so, they'd better watch out for The Bureau.

johnny cakes is a caribbean term for a fried bread/dough concoction.... its a flour based dough, with salt and water, though sometimes a bit milk is substituted, also the small balls of dough can come kneaded in with grated coconut to make "coconut johnny cakes". Interesting enough (for the restaurant to be so recently opened), "johnny cakes and saltfish" is a popular breakfast meal especially for easter when most families have a fresh stock all weekend, from Good Friday on to Easter Sunday Brunch. ...So here's to hoping that its a Caribbean food spot and i can check it out this weekend.

My grandmother calls it Johnny Cakes when she fries cornmeal mixed with water. I always thought they were what you ate when you're poor and from Alabama.
