Bureau rumored to be closing

Posted by Cliff Bostock on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 3:02 PM

In case you haven't already heard, the Bureau on Edgewood Avenue is rumored to be closing. I wrote co-owner Chris Lopez on Facebook and he declined to confirm the news but said he'd have a "statement" in a few days.

This is bad news for a beautiful space. The restaurant has made many attempts in its brief life to attract more customers, including hiring Shaun Doty to rework its menu and offering near give-away specials and theme nights.

That's a shame, it's a beautiful space and I frequently come here more than Noni's. However, the place was always dead.

I hope it succeeds in staying open. It was always on my list of places to go but didn't; if it sticks around, I promise to go when I come back in town.

i will see you there kali / Mr Bostock before you start posting rumors. Please make sure your sources are accurate. This can be damaging to the owners.

I hope this isn't true - I've been several times and love this spot! I agree that its vital to this growing area. But I was there last night and the upper level was closed off and it was pretty empty... hoping its only due to the holiday weekend.

So how do you close a restaurant in Atlanta? Hire Shaun Doty as your consulting chef. Dereck Lawford Pubs...Check. The Bureau...Check. El Taco....probably soon.

Yes hiring Shaun Doty was a turn off for me. Shaun's was a complete disappointment and now that the Shed has Shaun's former righthand man I am no longer interested in going there. Shaun quit killing restaurants.

@Matt Which RHM is at the Shed?

Thanks for the advice, Foodieman, but my job is not PR for restaurants. I reported that the restaurant is RUMORED to be closing and that Chris, one of the OWNERS whom I know fairly well, had not confirmed it.

oh, im sorry Mr. Bostock. didn't mean to come off like that.

@ Matt & Jsf: Doty's former right hand man is Lance Gummere who happens to be a very talented, hard working Chef and a great guy. I fail to see the relevance of your post(s). More anonymous personal attacks.....

I was not attacking Lance, I was just wondering if it was in fact him. I know one of Shaun's other collegues Robert is at Holy Taco, a building you must know well Nick. And where can I find your free form ravioli these days?

Heya Jsf: It's all good, I just get defensive of people talking anon. About my colleagues on the web. And especially people I respect, Lance being one of them. :) As for the Ravioli, it's in DC these days.

This is a bummer for the Bureau , but its not Shaun's fault-his food is awesome. Should consider that maybe a restaurant hiring a consultant is already struggling. Hard time 4 the biz, support the ones u luv.

Location. I live near Edge/Boulevard and have considered going here, but I have noticed increased activity (not good activity) in this area. It seems to have gotten worse and then there was that guy who worked next to the Bureau at Baby Lou's who was shot and killed a block away from there after leaving. Cheap drink and a Shaun Doty menu won't get me to risk my life or wallet to go here.

LBD unfortunately one of the biggest problems at Edgewood and Hillard is Baby Lou's. That takeout place gives the dealers a excuse for hanging out on the corner. The police will ask the dealers what they are doing and they are always waiting on food. The city closed down the shady motel on Hillard but then the dealers moved to Edgewood. The Bureau was making a different in crime by having a cop at the door...I feel bad for Noni's if the Bureau is gone because they are now alone.

Kevin, I agree completely. Don't get me wrong, I would love for both the Bureau and Noni's to thrive. My personal preference would have been for them to be closer to Edge/Blvd around the Corner Tavern. Competition is always a good thing and I would have enjoyed more options on the corner. I've lived in the area for 5 years now and I walk to work most of the time downtown and have seen the increase in activity on Edge and Auburn and I am only comfortable walking that area during the day and didn't have an uneasy feeling the way I do now. Unfortunately that pesky tornado took with it the Auburn precinct.

edgewood will pull through. they got dynamic dish, cafe circa, shauns, miso, and soon to be suite lounge and ria's sauced.

foodieman - has construction started back up on Suite Lounge? I am not sure of that location due to all work stopping around last September...

report
Posted by Kevin on April 15, 2009 at 8:48 AM

seems like construction has stopped. no recent activity. something with the edgewood restaurants..they all seem to take forever to open. How long did it take noni? bureau? miso? sauced? maybe its due to the city.

CON-SULTING CHEF, what's your beef with Shaun Doty? Why all of the hate? John-

report

I don't know foodieman. I don't think I would mention Shaun's and Dynamic Dish in the same breathe in terms of location. Shaun's is considered to be part of Inman Park, not Edgewood. There's a certain stigma about labeling yourself as a restaurant in Edgewood, i.e. drug dealers, the homeless, etc. Let's face it. While it's all fine and colorful and even "safe" during the day, walk one street too far or venture out at night past the Midtown area and you're likely to encounter some sort of criminal element, plain and simple.
