Natural Child feels ‘Okey Dokey’

The laid-back trio proves that Nashville still fosters a powerful vein of straight-cut rock ‘n’ roll

What with the roaring popularity of such atrocities as “bluegrass brunch” — *shiver* — it can be easy to forget Nashville still fosters a throbbing, powerful vein of straight-cut rock ‘n’ roll. Natural Child serves as one potent reminder. The trio’s sneering, guitar-heavy sound thuds as an homage to rock staples like the Rolling Stones, but tinged with campfire smoke. New album Okey Dokey reflects the dudes’ DGAF approach and psych tendencies to the craft, perhaps best on “Self Centered Blues,” a winding trot through the sparkling brain of an adult Peter Pan voluntarily stuck in Tennessee. It’s a pleasant stroll.
