We dined at the new Painted Table Cafe (465 Boulevard, 404-622-4353) last night. The menu, originally planned only for breakfast and lunch, is mainly egg dishes, sandwiches and burgers, like Wayne's "black 'n' blue" one featuring peppercorn bacon, blue cheese, caramelized onion and an 8-oz. blackened patty.
I ordered shrimp and grits, the restaurant's most expensive dish at $12.95. It included 8 oz. of jumbo tiger shrimp, fire-roasted red peppers, mushrooms, onions and a somewhat unusual spicy "red gravy" -- all over creamy grits.
The restaurant does not serve alcohol or desserts, though both should be available in January.
Our food, which also included a bowl of she-crab soup and a gigantic biscuit, was mainly good. The restaurant, formerly Taqueria Zocalo's space, has a very pleasant vibe with some great art on display.
