Calavino Donati, best known for her restaurant, Roman Lily Cafe, has opened Urban Cannibals in East Atlanta Village with her spouse, Doria Roberts, a singer and activist who was recently a guest at the White House with a handful of other artists.

The couple are offering a daily-changing menu of sandwiches. Today, I tried this one -- roasted pork with piquillos and a luscious spread of horseradish and Granny Smith apples on Cuban bread. My side dish was a cup of potato soup, perfect for a cold, rainy day. There are only a couple of tables, so most of the food is prepared for takeout.

Cannibals offers a variety of entrees, available evenings only. These are prepared only by reservation, so subscribe to the store's Twitter or Facebook feeds @UrbanCannibals. Among yesterday's dishes were turkey-poblano meatloaf with garlic-mashed potatoes and jalapeno gravy; kale simmered in chicken stock; dill-tarragon pesto with blanched almonds; and a spinach-goat cheese salad with a vinaigrette of figs, walnuts and black truffle oil.

Donati and Roberts are also offering weekly CSA boxes with local produce and assorted goodies from Calavino's kitchen.

Oh, one warning. Calavino might hug you. Her touchy-feely style annoyed some commenter on a thread about her a year ago. As John Kessler says on his blog, Calavino has "a wonderful spirit."

Cliff much love for you!! I actually went to Roman Lily's based upon your review back in 2000! For those that do not know CSA boxes are "community supported agriculture". Which means you have the freshest of the fresh and you are supporting something grown local at Urban Cannibals!
