Looking for collards and black-eyes at the last minute?

If you're looking for a last-minute site to consume the appropriate Southern food for New Year's Day, I doubt you'll do better than Shaun's this evening.

Shaun Doty is cooking up a $35 three-course dinner that includes your choice of fried chicken, country-fried steak or shrimp and grits (with pork belly). Appetizer choices include Sea Island red-pea soup, pimento cheese with crudite or a wedge of local lettuce. Dessert can be hummingbird cake or homemade ice cream.

All meals include the traditional sides of money-making, luck-bringing collards, black-eyed peas and cornbread. There's something poetic about this, since the restaurant is located in the space originally occupied by Deacon Burton's, our city's longtime favorite soul-food restaurant.

Shaun's opens at 5 p.m. and you can make reservations by calling 404-577-4358.
