Midtown Tavern goes gastropub

We dined at Midtown Tavern (554 Piedmont Ave., 404-541-1372) last night. Chef Robert Cassi has debuted a new menu there, aiming to create a gastropub with locally sourced and organic ingredients insofar as possible.

I enjoyed my "all-natural" fried chicken -- half a bird served with mashed Yukon Gold potatoes and bourbon-glazed baby carrots. Cassi soaks the chicken in buttermilk and it is fried to order. There's a 15-minute wait for the cripsy-moist chicken, but we happily filled the time with a plate of mediocre hummus and a surprisingly tasty grilled margherita pizza.

The main drawback here is the ambiance. It's a pretty hardcore bar -- black walls and pool tables -- and only one person was working the bar and dining room last night. I give her total props because she did not miss a beat.

Other temptations on the menu include an "all-natural" ribeye steak with bone-marrow butter, a grilled pork shop, an ostrich burger, a falafel burger and more.
