Kool Korners coming back?

Posted by Cliff Bostock on Mon, Mar 8, 2010 at 5:00 PM

Lance Gummere, chef at the Shed on Glenwood, writes this tantalizing bit: "Saw a sign for Kool Korners in the new building where the old one stood (on 14th Street). Got the scoop? I don't but I'd love to read about it."

I haven't been able to get the story yet. Anyone know anything?....

I've also received this notice from Dara Berendt: "Just a note to let you know that Havana Grill is now open. We opened last Wednesday. Hope you can stop by for "A delightful Cuban Experience"!  This email is not meant to bring up the everlasting controversy over the two Havanas. We are sooooooooo over that. Havana Grill is one of many Cuban restaurants in Atlanta, and if I do say so myself, one of the best!"

Well, I can't really print Dara's email without bringing up the controversy to which she alludes. But rather than reiterate it here, I'll refer you to Jennifer Zyman's account of how two restaurants came to claim to be the natural heirs to the long popular Havana Sandwich Shop, which burned a few years ago.

The new restaurant is located at 3373 Buford Hwy. (404-633-4999).

Sorry, but if you're jonsing for an authentic Kool Korner Cuban, you'll need to drive to Vestavia Hills, AL where Ildefonso Ramirez has opened a new Kool Korner (not suprising, to great success). The 14ht and State St location is just the name that the developer has given the building. I understand that he would like to find some sort of food concept to go into the space, but the rent will make it difficult for any but perhaps a franchise to make it at that location. (can't remember the amount so I won't mis-state it here).

I was recently looking for the website for that little commercial development that's going on that corner, and they said nothing about the Kool Korner grocery coming back. The impression I got was that they were just playing off of the name. Now I can't seem to find that site, though.

I was running down 14th Street yesterday and noticed a new place opening up between State and GPB, The Crazy Cuban. The sign just said coming soon, it looked like they still had some work to do.

As with the first commenter, Kool Korner has opened in Vestavia Hills. I recently visited and talked with the staff, reminiscing about the good ol' days. He is always happy to hear from people who visited the atlanta location. There are "Best of Atlanta" pictures all over the wall and a small bit dedicated to Georgia Tech. Still, the sandwich was the same awesomeness, and it brought me back a bit. -Thomas
