Decatur is the place to head when you're hungry for Indian food. We visited the latest to open there, Madras Woodlands (2201 Lawrenceville Hwy., 404-248-9333), Sunday night.

This restaurant occupies the shopping center space that was most recently Madras Chettinaad. Before that, it was Bollywood Masala. The new name is a common one, derived from restaurants of the same name in India, according to our server.

The restaurant's very inexpensive lunch buffet has created some buzz (11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. daily), but it apparently only opened for dinner the night before our visit.

Madras Woodlands' enormous menu includes cooking from both the southern and northern parts of India — meaning that both meat and vegetarian dishes are on the menu. The most unusual dish we sampled — unusual to us, anyway — was a very aromatic curry flavored with cinnamon, featuring crab claws (top photo). We also nearly killed ourselves with an order of batter-fried hot peppers that looked kind of like corn dogs (right photo).

Overall, our meal was good. I'll have more to say in "Grazing" later this week.

How funny. A friend and I just visited Madras Woodlands for dinner last night. They have a large menu of choices, many of which are vegetarian. The garlic naan was probably the best part of my meal. The Chicken Korma is good, but not as spicy as it should be and my white rice was very sticky. My friend ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, which had a very flavorful creamy red sauceand huge chunks of chicken. His rice was more like a pilaf. It was good, but I think I'd like to try other locations in the neighborhood too. I didn't realize they had just reopened this past weekend. It was pretty empty, but for a Sunday night I had expected it to be so.

Just got back from dinner at Madras Woodlands. Excellent food, and "to be expected" service.
Of all the iterations of the restaurant over the many years at the same location, this would probably have to be the best. The chicken biryani was great, and didn't taste like store bought masalas mixed/cooked with rice, the Chicken 65 was tasty but not too overly oily, the chicken kurma was interestingly different from most other restaurants, and had good "kick", and the dosa was excellent. Over all a wonderful culinary treat.
However, like most Indian restaurants, don't expect good/ average service. You don't go to an Indian restaurant for service, you go for amazing food, and they did not disappoint.

Don't ever eat in this restaurant, we had to change our glass of water 4 to 5 times . Each time they filled up my glass it had white stuff floating in it. They dint have bottled water. Customer service was shit.
Wouldn't recommend this restaurant to any one..
