The Reserve opens and I can finally drink on a roof in O4W

You'd think a city like Atlanta with equal parts urban skyline, stretching greenery and temperate climate (okay, not so much this summer) would be home to tons of favorite rooftop bars—but no! Where are all my rooftop bars at!? We certainly have enough vacant high-rises to stick on top a few watering holes. I love rooftop bars with a passion, but many of the ones in Atlanta, like those at the W Hotels, are too fancy for everyday alcoholism. Leave it to the corner of Edgewood and Boulevard to strike the right balance of trendy lounge and downtown nonchalance with the Reserve.

The Reserve opened this past Thursday above Cafe Circa with Latin music playing, cigars handed out and a few hookahs in the front. The hookahs didn't really take off—it seemed weird watching people smoke hookah while bolstered up at a high pub tables—but guests seemed to like it. The space is comfortable and not overdecorated, a welcome change again from the other pretentious rooftop bars in the city. The bar is only on the second story and facing southward from Edgewood, so it's not exactly a glamorous city view. However, it's the perfect environment to chill out with a nice drink without the posing. (Do I pose?)

Why is it called The Reserve? Is it a sanctuary in the Old Fourth Ward, or are they budging you to make a reservation? And now that O4W has been overtaken as the new nightlife scene (with the popularity of the Sound Table and the transformation of Noni's Saturday night dance party to the new frat make-out spot), what neighborhood could there possibly be left to gentrify? I pondered these looming questions while drinking cocktails created by mixologist Ava Kopieczek and eating tapas from Executive Chef Hopeton Hibbert.

I'm not sure Atlanta knows what tapas are, and if so, it seems like they don't care. All new restaurants have to call everything tapas. The food was tasty, like goat empanadas with habanero tomato sauce, but those are just h'orderves plain and simple. What's so wrong with calling them h'orderves? I think it's a nice name. I went to Entice-A on Ponce for the Scoutmob coupon, and they served up straight-up main dishes and called them tapas. Does the name make them taste better?

Our waitress was fantastic, having just moved back to Atlanta from London and ready to share all her feelings on the Atlanta scene. As long as she kept the drinks coming, we were more than happy to listen. With the weather cooling, but not my appetite for a delicious drink, the Reserve may become a go-to spot when I need to get some fresh air.

The Reserve. 464 Edgewood Ave. 404-477-0008.
