Please, Ronald McDonald, say it isn't so!

This repulsive looking, Pepto-Bismol-colored extrusion is chicken...for human consumption, according to Early Onset of Night:

Say hello to mechanically separated chicken. It’s what all fast-food chicken is made from—things like chicken nuggets and patties. Also, the processed frozen chicken in the stores is made from it.

Basically, the entire chicken is smashed and pressed through a sieve—bones, eyes, guts, and all. it comes out looking like this.

There’s more: because it’s crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia, soaked in it, actually. Then, because it tastes gross, it will be reflavored artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with artificial color.

But, hey, at least it tastes good, right?

High five, America!

If it makes anyone feel a bit better, the "all fast food chicken" part is not true (nor is all processed frozen chicken products). I've done a good bit of work for a chicken processor and they supply several fast food companies (not McDonalds), and while the "scraps" that make up some of the products aren't the most pleasant things, they aren't this repulsive (and they don't include eyes, guts, or beaks).

Not ALL fast food chicken. Those good 'ol favorites at Chick-fil-A actually use REAL chicken breasts. I used to work there and have seen them with my own eyes!

***Have you also done a piece about the "pink slime" in all public school and fast food beef? I haven't eaten FF beef since January when I read the NY Times article about it. Nasty!

Meh. I'm sure you could point a camera at many aspects of meat handling -- slaughter, gutting, butchering -- and capture something gross. If you're going to gnaw on the carcass of a butchered animal, it seems kinda like spitting hairs to get riled up about how the carcass gets treated before it's put on your plate.

Ugh...incorrect information. As a part of the media as well...I feel compelled to do some research. According to an executive in the chicken industry here in Atlanta, when chickens are slaughtered for any human consumption, the eyes (staying as a part of the head) are sent to rendering and become fertilizer and occasionally pet food. Heads/eyes/etc are USDA condemned when it comes to human consumption...so trust me, if they are in business and have a food service license and PARTICULARLY if they are a major fast food chain, they aren't serving it. This is raw chicken and raw chicken is pink. There's nothing amiss here.

Jenny, your source is an executive in the chicken industry. He is bias. You call it 'research' but really it's one-sided information from a person that can gain financially based on the information he provides. Journalism 101, Ms. Part-of-the-Media. The meat industry often hides the grotesque nature of their product. Just because the USDA says no, doesn't mean the producers and processors follow the rules. If they did, there would be zero salmonella or e-coli breakouts. There would be no mad cow disease. Go ahead and eat it because they say it's safe, you foolish little sheep. If that goo looks like chicken to you, great. You eat it first, LOL.

Thank you, Grimmace. All these nasty greedy people that come up with excuses why it's ok to eat that crap are unbelievable.

That repulsive looking gunk would never be used in any Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant, you can rest assured of that. We only used quality Grade A Broilers in all of our restaurants. I've seen first hand what comes in on our trucks and I cook real chicken pieces and our fillets and chicken strips are sliced chicken breasts. Even our pop corn chicken is bite size chicken pieces, and not processed from ground up chicken.

Danny's link above to a well known rumor-busting site seems quite reliable. Although the gunk pictured is real, it doesn't include beaks, eyes, baubles and beads.

Damn!

I'm on my way to get some McNuggets for lunch after seeing this--make it a 20 pack!

Kind of looks like the glop they eat in the Matrix.
