During the weekend of March 11, Savannah's International Trade & Convention Center will play host to the Georgia Organics 14th Annual Conference & Expo "GO GROW!" Food scientist and avtivist Dr. Vandana Shiva will be the keynote speaker of the two-day event, which is the largest sustainable agriculture event in the southeast.
Shiva, who has published 20 books and numerous scientific papers and was named an environmental hero by Time magazine in 2003, will kick off a weekend that is dedicated to supporting the health and growth of Georgia's sustainable local food systems.
Events of the weekend run the gamut in organic-farm fun. From in-city chicken raising, a home-brewing class, bee keeping and Earth day festival, there are agricultural activities for practically any taste. The events are divided up between "For Eaters," "For Gardeners," "For Schools," and, of course, "For Farmers," but many of the events seem to span the categories. There is also substantial DIY fun to be had during the events.
Along with these interactive events and classes will be the conference programs. There will be a screening of "Grow," a documentary about "Georgia's next generation of young, organic farmers." Additionally, individual vendors will be exhibiting their products or services and there will be tours of 12 local farms.
Moving to the Expo side of the conference, Georgia Organics will host six different expos. One, entitled "We're Jammin," is pretty much what you would expect: if you have an instrument, come play music around organic food on the Friday night of the conference. Later that night there will a book signing by Jeremy Smith and Elaine Weiss. There will also be a seed swap, silenct auction, children's program and a "Farmers Feast," prepared by Chef Matt Rohar.
To attend the conference, go online to register. To attend the entire conference, GO Members pay $185 before Feb. 25, $215 after. Non-members pay $275. See website for pricing on individual events.
