Gravy Train: Thumbs Up opens a BBQ restaurant, Fifth Group's new concept

Twains
  • Will fans of Twain's brews be allowed to take beer to-go?
The folks who brought you Thumbs Up Diner have now opened Thumbs Up Smokehouse right next door to the diner on Edgewood. The operation is currently open from 11 a.m - 5 p.m. and is cash only.

Fifth Group will be bringing a new concept to the shuttered Vickery’s location on Crescent Avenue in Midtown. Announced via Twitter, they are unsure of what the restaurant will be at this time, but they are toying with a few different ideas. This will be the seventh Atlanta location for Fifth Group, after their new Mexican concept opens Downtown.

Stevie Wonder was in town for an event yesterday and dined at Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, even jumping on stage to join the band in a few songs.

Decatur’s Ale Yeah! teased via Twitter this week that they will be offering growlers, a jug which allows you to take draft beer to-go. According to a story on 11Alive, Twain's is also looking in the possibility of offering their beer in growlers, though it’s not yet known if liquor laws will allow it (surprise, surprise).

More happy news for lushes, Thrillist reports on a new app that will help you find drink specials around Atlanta. The free app is called DrinkOwl and allows users so pick their poison, sorting deals by beer, wine, mixed drinks or liquor. A handy map pops up a visual guide to drinking your face off without going broke.

Kirkwood Bar and Grill, replacing Kirkwood Public House, has launched their website, giving us a peek at their food and drink offerings. The menu consists of typical sports bar food - fried goodness, burgers, and a few salads for good measure. Interestingly (and by that I mean hilariously), there’s a dedicated Four Loko section. They will be open 7 days a week from 2 p.m. “until late.”

Cafe at Pharr, now in their new Buckhead location at 3145 Peachtree Road, announced that they Westside location on Chattahoochee Avenue will open May 1. They will also open Baci Restaurant & Bar by Cafe at Pharr in the TOWN Brookhaven development.

El Toro, located on Memorial Drive in Grant Park, has closed. With the number of TexMex options in town and mediocre reviews of El Toro’s offerings, I doubt it will be missed.

In other closings no one will lose sleep over, The Wafflery has closed in Lenox Mall.

Diesel Filling Station in Virginia-Highland will be adding additional lunch hours, opening at noon on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. They were already serving lunch and brunch dishes on weekends, but didn’t previously open for lunch during the week. Lunch service started this week.

All three Atlanta locations of NY Butcher Shoppe are now stocking White Oak Pastures grassfed beef. Available cuts include tenderloin, ribeye, flat iron, petite tenders and ground grass fed beef that is fresh ground daily.

The Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market is back this Saturday with the first market of the season. The market is one of the larger ones in town, with over 50 vendors. The chef demo for this week’s opening market will be Ron Eyester of Rosebud and The Family Dog. The market runs from 8:30 a.m. until noon.
