Gravy Train: A new restaurant for Aria's Gerry Klaskala, Dulce Vegan opens

Gerry Klaskala, the chef and owner of Aria, will be opening a new restaurant Downtown this year. Klaskala is aiming for a late summer opening. More details on exact location, name etc. as we get them...

The new location of Grindhouse Killer Burgers is now open on Piedmont near Cheshire Bridge Road. This is the first stand-alone location for the burger joint, with their original outpost offering limited hours within the Sweet Auburn Curb Market. The Piedmont location will serve both lunch and dinner daily.

Dulce Vegan had their soft opening this week in Kirkwood. The menu is loaded with things that sound appealing to anyone who loves sweets, even those of the non-Vegan persuasion. The bakery uses all natural ingredients and sources locally, with cake flavors like Lemon Raspberry and Mexican Chocolate.

Cakes & Ale projects that their new, expanding location - which includes a bakery and dessert bar - will be opening in June.

Westside Pie pizzeria is coming to Huff Road, located in the Apex West Midtown property.

Flying Biscuit mentioned on Twitter that locations in Brookhaven (in TOWN Brookhaven) and Peachtree City (Highway 54) are coming soon. This will make nine Atlanta-area locations of biscuit goodness.

Newk’s Express Cafe will be bringing their concept to Atlanta, with at least five Atlanta-area locations planned for 2011. The fast casual chain serves made-to-order salads, sandwiches, pizzas and more. Proposed locations include Buckhead, Midtown, Augusta and Peachtree City/Newnan.

Aurelio’s Pizza, a Midwest-based chain, will open their first Georgia location in East Cobb, with the opening slated for the end of May. The Chicago pizzeria will be located at 1255 Johnson’s Ferry Road. The pizza seems to have a bit of a cult following, but their main focus is thinner crusted pies, perhaps a surprise to those hoping to find some authentic Chicago deep dish.

What Now Atlanta reports that The Spotted Trotter is opening a storefront in Kirkwood on Hosea Williams in the former Corner Market location. The charcuterie, which has been selling their goods for some time now through farmer's markets and specialty shops, will carry locally cured meats, sausages and other "meaty treats" like grass-fed jerky.

Cliff also mentioned that Cockpit, a new bar, has opened in Grant Park in the former Painted Table location.

A clarification on the restaurant opening at 905 Juniper in the former Cuerno space: While the place does have an ownership link to Sound Table and Top Flr in the form of Darren Carr, he is the only partner in those businesses associated with the new spot. The other owner is Dinner Party's Patrick La Bouff.

Juniors, a staple on the Georgia Tech campus for over 60 years, is closing the doors this week due to - what else - an unfortunate slowdown in their business. Diehards haven't given up hope that the restaurant may re-open.

Growlers are in at Hop City, allowing customers to buy draft beer to take home with them.

Dekalb County’s newly proposed Comprehensive Smoke-Free Air Ordinance (PDF) would prohibit smoking in all public places as well as within 20 feet of all bars and restaurants with outdoor eating areas - and, of course, on said patios. The county held a public hearing on the the proposed plan this Thursday.

OpenTable has put together a series of “Top 50” lists ranking restaurants nationwide in various categories. Rankings are based on diner feedback. Atlanta restaurants making the recently released lists were Einstein's and Park’s Edge (Best Brunch) and TWO Urban Licks (Hot Spot).

The group behind The Diner at North Point and Sage Woodfire Tavern in Alpharetta announced that they will be opening a new concept called SPICE Brick Oven Kitchen, a tapas and bar establishment. The restaurant will be located near North Point Mall and will open sometime this spring.

Sixes Tavern is coming in July to the Bridgemill area of Canton, GA. The restaurant will be an upscale bar and grill serving lunch and dinner daily.

Brookhaven Patch reports on a makeover at the local McDonalds, complete with sleek new seating and an outdoor patio.
