Restaurant Eugene has added a dessert tasting menu to their offerings. Developed by Pastry Chef Aaron Russell, the three and five course tastings are coursed, and come with optional pairings. A recent five course tasting included items like: lavender lemonade and vanilla ice cream float, caramel ganache with espresso anglaise and streusel, and pickled strawberries. 3 and 5 course dessert tastings are available nightly and are $18 and $24.
Cami Cakes (which happens to get my vote for best cupcakes in town) is opening a new location in Vinings in the former Sweet Pockets. This will be their second Atlanta shop, and they plan to open in July.
The Great Cupcake Company, currently a delivery-based operation offering all natural, organic and vegan friendly cupcakes, is opening a storefront in Buckhead near the Fellini’s on Peachtree.
Gelato Stop has popped up at Chastain Park, serving Italian Ice Cream treats all summer from their brightly colored truck. Find them at the intersection of Wieuca and Galloway, across the street from the tennis courts at Chastain Park. The pre-packaged, 4 oz cups in flavors like Tiramasu and Key Lime Sorbetto go for $3.50 a pop.
And the dessert news just keeps coming... Another new frozen treats concept, Cowlicks Yogurt and Floats, recently opened in Vinings (on Cumberland Boulevard) is planning to open a second location in Dunwoody before the summer’s out. The self-service shop lets diners build a custom creation, choosing from 10 flavors of yogurt, 28 toppings and the option to turn any sundae into a float. The new Dunwoody location will be at 1100 Hammond Drive. Cowlicks is a Big Game Brands (formerly Raving Brands) concept.
Lately it seems like very often when a restaurant closes, something similar opens in the space (including Cami Cakes, mentioned above). Seems a little counter-intuitive, since they first place couldn’t stay afloat. That being said, Vinny’s N.Y. Pizza will be taking a swing at replacing the shuttered Z Pizza in Spire Midtown.
Fado is bringing the Pickleback... back, and also introducing a slew of new brew-based cocktails. For those not initiated into the Pickleback club (which includes me, thank goodness), a Pickelback is a shot of Jameson Irish Whiskey followed by a shot of fresh pickle brine. The Irish pub’s summertime beer-based cocktails include “Guinness Mixers,” which is Guinness combined with yoru choice of six other beers ranging from Hoegaarden (Dirty Hoe) to Strongbow (Black Velvet). There are also a few non-Guinness cocktails including a Fado original, the Sweet Hoe — Smirnoff Raspberry Vodka, sour mix, strawberry puree and Hoegaarden served over ice.
Thrillist reports on the opening of The Roswell Tap, a casual, new bar and restaurant in Roswell. The neighborhood bar is actually located in the historic home of the town’s founder. With classic bar bites, over 50 beer choices and Roswell’s largest deck for soaking up the summer sun, sounds like an instant hit for the suburban ‘hood.
Downtown Decatur may soon allow restaurants to offer seating in the Marta Plaza, which would bring more outside dining to the restaurants in the area and also help alleviate sidewalk congestion. Restaurants would share the area and identify their tables using colored umbrellas. Tables would be cleared out during special events.
Atlantic Station has expanded their Food Truck Fridays event to include dinner. Trucks will be serving at Atlantic Station from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. during the shopping center’s free outdoor concert series.
UPDATE: Paul Calvert, Sound Table's Mixologist extraordinaire, has taken a position at Pura Vida. His cocktails will be available beginning June 20.
