Omnivore - This So Ba Octopus late night thingie looks pretty cool

Texts from Friday night and the emergence of cool late night in EAV

Image The image you see to the right is a text I received this past Friday night/Saturday morning from one Wyatt Williams. I thought he was babbling about eating octopus at So Ba’s new late night patio venture. But no, apparently the new venture is now named Octopus.

Luckily I was only a few short steps away, being kicked out of the Earl. Past last call and all that. So I sashay/stumbled over to So Ba and rudely demanded to eat a few bites of what Wyatt and his friends had ordered. I remember rabbit and pasta and something delicious and creamy, all in one big bowl. I don’t remember much else.

On Sunday, I went back to So Ba to take advantage of their weekend “hangover helper” special, where you get a bowl of pho and a bloody mary for $10. While I was there I picked up the menu for Octopus. And it looks good. Really good.

Examples: Rabbit and shrimp wonton, chinese broccoli, egg noodle soup. $8. Toro tartare, quail egg, rice cracker. $12. Lamb terrine, peanut hummus, pickled mushroom, grilled bread. $10. And that bowl of yum I barely remember from the other night? Braised rabbit, ricotta cavatelli, greens, cauliflower cream, curry oil. $9. There are also two “family style” dishes that are more expensive - steamed whole red snapper with accompaniments for $28, and daeiji bulgolgi with spicy korean pork, kimchi, pickled daikon radish and steamed rice for $22.

Five cocktails, two sakes, a bunch of beer, and a few wines make up the drink selection. I’ll probably stay away for a while until I can go back and review, ahem, soberly. But I wanted to let y’all know that it’s worth checking out now.
