Get your food insurance now

Okay, I admit it. I'm a radio masochist. On the way to meet friends for lunch today, I was listening to Glenn Beck and, during a commercial break, he endorsed a company called Food Insurance.

Eating for part of my living made me instantly interested, of course. Would this company reimburse me if I filed a claim for the cost of the many shitty meals I eat but don't report about? No. "Food insurance" is a backpack full of enough freeze-dried meals to last 14 days. One backpack costs $199.99.

Although it advocates purchase in case of natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the real appeal is to people awaiting a terrorist attack. As such, it reminds me of the hysteria after the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early '60s. Everyone began building fallout shelters and stocking them with canned food.

If you have any doubt about the motivation, check out the site's pictures of right-wing radio hosts who have joined Beck in endorsing this survival tool jam-packed with freeze-dried gourmet food guaranteed to remain edible, even after 10-plus years.
