New York Times plays catch-up (sort of)

I'm sure you've already seen the New York Times slide show on the rebirth of the Old Fourth Ward as a "cradle of culinary and artistic innovation." (They also used the word "gentrification" which enraged several readers when I used it a couple of years ago. I hope the Times writer is prepared!)

The Times features Kevin Rathbun Steak, Highland Bakery and — OMG! — Sister Louisa's Church of the Living Room and Ping-Pong Emporium." Religion is officially dead! Owner Grant Henry is to blame.

But wait, there's more. The Times also recently ran a piece entitled "A Large Side of Drama at Waffle House Diners." The piece was filed from Avondale Estates, where the Waffle House Museum is. It focuses on the way the restaurant is both a target of criminals and a favored place to kick back.

Fascinating stuff, but not nearly as good a read as CL food editor Besha Rodell's account of her 22-hour encampment at the Waffle House on Cheshire Bridge last year. She won the American Food Journalists' 2011 award for "Best Food Essay."

I suggest you read it for a kinder-gentler-funnier look at Waffle House, especially if the Times piece scares the shit out of you.

The link to Besha's story appears to go to the Waffle House Museum instead.
