(UPDATE BELOW)

Yep, now it can be told: Tierra's closing in February.

I wrote a post on Nov. 28 announcing that one of the city's best restaurants was closing, but withheld the name. Some commenters got their panties in a terrible wad because I didn't name names at the time. I did report owner/chef Dan Krinsky's comments about the decision since I thought they were an interesting description of what restaurateurs are dealing with these days.

Dan has gone to work teaching at the Atlanta branch of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. He's liking it a lot. Wife and co-owner/chef Ticha Krinsky is working overtime in Dan's absence.

I will miss the Latin American restaurant immensely. Meridith Ford Goldman, former AJC dining critic, named it the best restaurant in the city in 2008.

UPDATE:

Here's the Krinskys' official announcement in their newsletter:

Happy Holidays to all our valued customers!!! Good luck and good health in
the New Year!

This will be our last newsletter. We have decided to close our restaurant
effective Friday, February 17th 2012. After almost 13 years we are starting a
new stage in our lives.

This decision was made based on many variables: the way of doing business
nowadays is very different than when we opened in 1999, we are older and
tired and the economic climate has made it increasingly more difficult to
turn a profit. Additionally, our landlord wanted a serious rent increase. But
the clincher was the fact that Dan was offered a position at the Cordon Blue
College of Culinary Arts in Atlanta and we quickly agreed that he couldn’t
pass up this opportunity. He’s been teaching for six weeks now.

Because of the way we have conducted our business we can make this
decision willingly, positively, without debt or doubt. We also feel a sense of
accomplishment: we introduced Atlanta to true Latin American flavors.

We will miss all of you who have shown us loyalty and appreciation.
We want to thank you for supporting us, understanding and enjoying our
food.

We will not be on OpenTable as of the 23rd of December so please call to
make reservations. We will take our customary break between Christmas
and New Year’s from December 24th, returning on Tuesday, January 3rd
with the winter menu. We will celebrate our 13th anniversary on Thursday,
February 16th.

Ticha has not yet decided what she will do. She will certainly be happy to
take orders for Tres Leches and perhaps other Tierra favorites. Keep track of
us on facebook at Tierra Restaurant and on twitter @tierraatlanta. We will
love to hear from you and we hope to see you from now through the 17th of
February!!! THANK YOU!!!

Damn. I literally tried to make a reservation here 90 minutes ago (for the first time in the 7 years I've lived here, despite reading positive reviews all that time). To speak to Cliff's article, I did notice Tierra's participation on Scoutmob, yet still didn't feel the need to make the reservation until I got my $50 opentable certificate. So I'd say, yeah, it's half economy, but I've also eaten at lots of other places even with Tierra in mind (or, rather, out of mind), so maybe it's also half marketing (and I agree that word of mouth is wonderful marketing, but Tierra never put themselves out there in my mind, and that keeps the cost down, but, I think I'm proving the cognitive dissonance of this entire discusssion.) So i guess there's that mess to consider. Still would have liked to have eaten there Friday.

sorry for the wordiness.

Tierra is my all-time-favorite restaurant in Atlanta so I am distressed to know they are closing. Dan and Tichia Krinsky provide great food at a good price in a cozy neighborhood restaurant. They treat their customers as honored guests in their home away from home. Highnoon's comment is very typical of many Atlantans. Intending to try a particular restaurant for seven years, really? Tierra is open until February 17 so anyone who wants to go there should support this jewel of a restaurant while they still have the time to experience it. Restaurant of the Year for 2008 tells you it's top notch.

"Some commenters got their panties in a terrible wad because I didn't name names at the time."

I don't think they were upset that you didn't "name names" per se, but more of the effect of not mentioning the names -- that being a useless article that used up bits and bytes to say absolutely nothing. That's all good for tweenagers on Tagged or Hi5, but kind of vexing when it comes from a professional journalist. I'm sure you understand more than you let on (at least I hope you do).
