What gives with Fig Jam?

I lunched today with friends at the new Fig Jam Kitchen & Bar in the Brookwood Station area. It's a second attempt there by the people who own Baraonda, a popular Midtown pizzeria. Their earlier attempt, Baroni, didn't last a year.

I'm not clear why they decided to make the change. The apparent manager told me today that the emphasis at Fig Jam is on "American food with global influences," while Baroni was all about casual Italian dining. Fine, but I saw very little, if any "global influence" that wasn't Italian.

The emphasis at night is on plates for sharing. Lunch is mainly the usual salads and sandwiches with some flat breads and a few pasta dishes. I ordered the flat bread (pictured here) with pork sausage, tomatoes, white cheddar and caramelized onions. I wish I could say it was better than average, but it was a true yawner whose flavor was almost entirely dependent on the onions.

Two others at the table ordered the lamb burger with goat cheese. They were similarly unimpressed and a bit annoyed that the meat was cooked beyond the medium-rare they ordered. A fourth at our table talked our terrific waiter into letting him order plates of cheese and cured meats from the dinner menu, along with the day's tomato-basil soup. He was satisfied.

This meh-ness is inexplicable, considering how enjoyable most of the food at Baroanda is, although I admittedly haven't been there in some time. But I can say one thing unequivocally: Fig Jam, like Baroni, is superior to the space's original tenant, Wolfgang Puck Express.

Since it is in my neighborhood, I had hopes that Fig Jam would be something interesting. Baroni wasn't bad, just a little inconsistent. I've not tried Fig Jam, yet, but this review doesn't make me want to run over there. Maybe I'll just wait for the next incarnation.

i was excited to try Fig Jam, mostly because the space looks fun, but I will say that, having had lunch at Baraonda recently, I'm not surprised that the food at Fig Jam is lacking. I'll NEVER go back to Baraonda. The food was truly embarrassing. Pastas were obviously re-heated, pizzas looked like they were from a middle school cafeteria and drinks were heavily watered down. Baraonda is clearly coasting on its location. Sad to hear Fig Jam is apparently no better.

Doctor: if you had a pizza that looked like it was from a high school cafeteria, then you weren't at Baronda. You must be mistaken. It's no Antico, but it's some damn fine pizza.

wow that picture looks awful. one, it's sausage and peppers, not tomatoes. two, it's the middle of winter. three, what horrible knife and plating skills.

Yep...I'll agree here. Went to Fig Jam a few weeks ago. First impression upon walking through the door was to wonder if an employee that had ben fired from Holeman and Finch had teamed up with Applebees to start developing a chain of these 'the trend has passed' type of restaurants. The food echoed my sentiments - octopus was charred beyopnd recognition, and cold to boot; sliders tasted like sloppy joe on a day old bun from a Publix bakery; cocktail tasted like watered down bourbon and Crystal Light; the flatbread we ordered was a glorified saltine; skipped dessert (which I almost never do, because the meal was so abysmal). Baroni was busted, Baronda is formulaic and boring, and this place is a disaster. Would be nice if this restaurant team moved their operation to a place like Selma, AL (where it belongs), and opened up some decent real estate for a decent eatery.

Friends and I dined at Fig Jam for dinner about 2 or 3 weeks ago, and it was excellent.

As a side note: Even bad food can photo nicely, so I'm not sure if your hastily snapped photo lends any credence to your story. Just because the food is bad does not mean that you have to post a crappy picture of the food. Here are photos from my experience at Fig Jam: http://www.foodspotting.com/places/342626-….

I don't have a stake in the place, but given your influence on readers, I hope this comment will prevent people from completely writing off the restaurant based on your review of flat bread and two lamb burgers.

Congrats. You're one of those incredibly annoying people who photographs their food, so they can act like they have some sort of special knowledge about food, while being nothing more than a narcissistic "foodie".

The food at this place sucks, as do the cocktails, as does the atmosphere. Contrary to you, I hope this article, by someone with a little more officiality than a login on foodspotting, deters people from this restaurant. It takes up valuable real estate, that could be occupied by something better - like McDonalds.

AtlantaAdvocate: we get it, you hated the place. But, other people may have a different opinion and they are just as entitled to share that as do you. Stop trying to beat people into submission with your opinion, it only makes you out to be a turd.
