'Dump Starbucks' and save marriage

Posted By on Wed, Mar 28, 2012 at 9:30 AM

Last week, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) announced its "Dump Starbucks" drive — a call for an international boycott of the coffee company. The reason? Starbucks goes too far in its support of marriage, apparently. It supports gay marriage.

NOM was specifically pissed off when the coffee mega-giant supported the successful drive to legalize gay marriage in Washington state, where it is headquartered.

The AP reported NOM's plan a week ago:

The group says it will place ads throughout the country, as well as in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, urging consumers to boycott the company. The group is supporting a referendum effort to overturn a recently passed law legalizing same-sex marriage in Washington state.

"We will not tolerate an international company attempting to force its misguided values on citizens," said the group's president, Brian Brown, in a written statement announcing the boycott.

Yesterday, the plot sickened. The Human Rights Campaign released internal NOM documents it has obtained. They outline NOM's strategy in 2009 to basically employ race-baiting techniques to build opposition to gay marriage. reports that about 19,000 NOM members have already pledged to join the Starbucks boycott. Impressive! But over 250,000 people have signed a petition supporting Starbucks. You can sign it on MoveOn's website. (And, yes, there's plenty wrong with Starbucks, but it deserves credit for this.)
