I'm in the Donut Hole camp by default. I've never been to Charlie's. Why not? Well, Alys Beach is more than a half hour ride down the road from where we stay, while the Donut Hole is a short five-minute jaunt. Also, reports are that Charlie's sells out by 9 a.m. or so each day, with lines forming before 6:30 a.m. when he opens up. If you want the good stuff, you've got to get there early. Finally ... I love the Donut Hole. Been going there for more than 20 years. An early morning donut run to the Donut Hole is as much a part of the Destin spring break experience as seeing packs of bikini-clad girls basking on the beaches and inebriated boys puking in the streets at 2 p.m. (where are their parents!? And sorry for that imagery, but I actually did see that on my recent trip).
If you do make it to the Donut Hole, I highly recommend getting in the donut line early, and getting a to-go order of an apple crumb and a red velvet and whatever else strikes your fancy. I do not recommend eating breakfast in; the breakfast fare is pretty standard, and the donuts are the way to go. Oh, and make sure you have some milk back at your place to pair up with the donuts.
As for Charlie's Donut Truck, I have some friends who swear by the place. I love the fact that it's a truck (though the donuts are not cooked in the truck but apparently shipped in from a place called Donut Land Express in Bonifay, Florida! SCAM ALERT!). I don't love the fact that it's a long way past the Donut Hole to get there. Some spring break morning when I wake up way too early, maybe I'll race down there for a taste of Bonifay. But I'm not counting on the two expressions "spring break morning" and "wake up way too early" to ever actually coalesce into reality. Til then, the Donut Hole will keep me happy.
I'll second the comment on the gnudi. It was outstanding. Love the wine list, too…
