Grant Central: Trout without brats

Thursday evening, Grant Central Pizza offered this savory, inexpensive special of Georgia trout sauteed in butter, lemon and capers, served over linguine, along with asparagus wrapped in crispy prosciutto. All for $9.

Readers may remember that the restaurant became the center of a literally international controversy in February. I reported then that a menu insert asked parents to "tend to their crying tots outside." The request was made because of complaints on websites like Yelp.

It has to be a measure of the news media's desperation that my post inspired, for example, the lead story on Fox 5 news. From London's Daily Mail to the Etiquette & Leadership Institute in Watkinsville, Ga., world diners rallied to protect their ear drums. Bill Maher even took up the cause!

According to people at the restaurant, the publicity was better for business than a Scout Mob coupon. Co-owner and folk hero Donnie Parmer was celebrated everywhere for supposedly "banning" noisy kids, even though he did nothing of the kind.

A denouement of sorts occurred at the restaurant soon after the media hysteria began. Fox 5 apparently missed this story, but here it is: One evening, a regular patron of the restaurant marched from the bar area to the dining room and blew up at a pack of poorly supervised Cub Scouts! For real. Insiders wonder who was noisier, the cubs or the adult? Get on that, Fox!

Anyway, dinner was delicious tonight, even though it did pose quite a dilemma. We dined outside on the sidewalk. I worried that if a child started screaming inside and was brought outside, our dinner would be ruined. Thus the warm weather clearly means those "crying tots" should be kept inside.
