I decided to drive around and hope for inspiration, down Decatur, up Boulevard, out on Ponce. And then I thought of HD1 and Super Pan. Now, neither of these two are known for being dirt cheap. Super Pan has gotten some flack for serving a $13 sandwich - but I think their Medio Dia is well worth the money. HD1 serves gussied up hot dogs for $4 to $8 - not bad, certainly, but a place like Barker's Red Hots offers a better bargain bite. I decided to pass on HD1 and (re)discovered that Super Pan offers a rotating assortment of daily special pastelitos (an empanada-like savory pastry) for just $2 each!
Today, Super Pan's pastelitos included one with pork belly and one with shrimp and calabaza. I got one of each, of course, and they were both ridiculously good. These pastelitos are rectangles of flaky crust, crunchy around the edges, soft but strong enough to stand up to the filling in the middle. The pork belly version offered a tender and meaty filling of pork-y goodness (chef Hector Santiago uses top-notch quality stuff), surrounded by meltingly soft cabbage and onion with a dash of habanero salt. The shrimp version offered a richer spin, with the shrimp and tender calabaza squash swimming in a creamy coconut habanero sauce that proved a bit messy - but worth the necessary napkins.
Either way, these little treats are as good as anything you can find in Atlanta for $2, and a combo of two of them makes for a perfect meal. Anyone else swear by Super Pan's bargain pastelitos? I hear the beef molé version is not to be missed (you can watch Super Pan's Facebook page to see their daily specials).
