I was quite dubious when a friend told me about his new afternoon habit of sipping a drink called Choffy. It's one of those products that seems to promise everything from keeping you alert to putting death off your agenda. It didn't reduce my skepticism to read that Oprah was all over it last month.
Choffy is a drink you brew in a French press with roasted cacao beans. Thus, it's effectively hot chocolate but it doesn't include all the cream and sugar of that drink as it's usually made. It's available in different varieties.
My friend brought me some in a thermos recently. My first taste didn't please me much. I felt like I was drinking watered down hot chocolate. But the more I rolled it around in my mouth, the more I liked its very layered, strong flavor. After a few sips, I ended up with a craving. In other words, it's like wine.
You can add cream and sugar, if you like, to up the hot-chocolate-ness. My friend does that to a marginal degree.
I'll let you check out the Choffy website for all the alleged health benefits, which are mainly the same as those attributed to dark chocolate. All of that aside, I did find the drink mildly stimulating but, most important, unexpectedly flavorful.
Oprah is so right on.
