As you probably know, Bon Appétit named Cardamom Hill and Cakes & Ale among its 50 nominees for inclusion in its annual list of the 10 best new restaurants in the US. According to the magazine, the 10 should be named tomorrow, Aug. 14.....

HE'S A DADDY: Jake Rothschild, owner of Irwin Street Market and Jake's Ice Cream, has adopted a four-year-old girl. He has been working on the adoption for several years. Incredibly, he said the child had been in over 40 foster homes in the last four years. You could do worse than a dad who makes ice cream and regularly teaches cooking classes to children...

FOR REAL: What local chef may appear, like Paula Deen, on the plastic wrapping of Springer Mountain Farms chickens?...

EW: Times are tough. So, apparently, is restroom maintenance. Clean 'em up, people....

BOOMING: Every Sunday, and sometimes weekdays, I take up one of the two tables at Grant Park Coffee House to work on my book, as I've written before. Business appears to be booming, and for good reason. Huge sandwiches are $6 each and house-made pastries like Turkish-apricot scones are barely a couple of dollars. There are breakfast "pockets" full of eggs and meats or tofu, and bowls of cheese-grits. If you live in Grant Park or you're visiting the zoo across the street, definitely give it a try. Even the ice cream is good, as any of the stream of kids will tell you.
